The aim of the course is to provide participants with an overview of morphometric approaches to studying morphological integration and modularity. The concepts of integration and modularity will be introduced and discussed in different contexts (e.g. development, individual variation, evolutionary change). The theoretical basis and application of different methods for analyzing integration and modularity in geometric morphometric data will be presented. Lectures will be combined with hands-on demonstrations of the analyses. Participants are encouraged to bring their own morphometric data for analysis and discussion in the workshop.

“Introducción a la MORFOMETRÍA GEOMÉTRICA”

Dirigido principalmente a estudiantes de posgrado, aunque la invitación queda abierta a estudiantes de licenciatura e investigadores. El curso tiene como objetivo proveer instrucción teórica y experiencia práctica en los métodos para el registro de datos morfométricos (coordenadas de marcas) y el análisis estadístico de la variación de la forma y tamaño. El curso se llevará a cabo en el Centro Interdisciplinario de Ciencias Marinas, en La Paz, Baja California Sur, México, del 27 de febrero al 2 de Marzo del 2012. (La fecha anunciada previamente del 20 al 24 de Febrero ha sido cambiada)

El curso está planeado para impartirse a un máximo de 25 participantes.

Following on from the success of the first two meetings held in Manchester in 2009 and Canterbury in 2010, we are pleased to announce the programme for the third meeting to be held in York.

Morphometric analyses are now widely used in biological and medical research, and new approaches to shape analysis are continually being developed and refined by statisticians.

Given the sizeable communities of both biologists and statisticians interested in shape analysis in the UK, this meeting aims to provide a stimulating forum for cross-disciplinary engagement between researchers. As such, we hope that the meeting will be an opportunity to showcase some recent research developments and stimulate new collaborative projects at the interface of statistics and the life sciences .

Existe la posibilidad de organizar una reunión de morfometría en México para el 2012. Queremos por este medio explorar el nivel de interes. Esperariamos que la ocasion fuera un foro para reunirnos biologos, antropologos , etc interesados en la morfometria tradicional y geometrica. Una reunion muy inclusiva. Ademas, por supuesto: quienes estarian interesados en ayudar en la organizacion?

La reunion seria en el formato de congreso con participaciones libres orales y posters. Incluiriamos una serie de cursos y talleres cortos sobre temas variados muy especificos a tareas de la investigacion morfometrica, los programas de computo mas comunes y las aplicaciones en varias areas (sistematica, filogenia, ecologia comparada, antropologia fisica, medicina, etc). Se solicitan sugerencias.

Para tener una estimacion del nivel de interes ponemos a su disposicion una encuesta (ver columna derecha). Ademas si esta interesad@ deje su comentario aqui, para tener idea de quienes estan votando y empezar a compilar una lista para avisos futuros.

La tercera entrega de la serie de descripciones de programas para morfometria es muy elemental, pero Uds amables lectores me dirán si esto es útil a alguien o no!
Estoy aprendiendo a usar un programa de captura de pantalla en vídeo para generar tutoriales en linea. Aquí esta mi primer ejercicio con MakeFan.

From Morfometria Geometrica

MakeFan es una utilidad incluida en el paquete IMP cuya función principal es dibujar moldes para guiar la captura de configuraciones de marcas de contornos. Un molde subdivide el contorno en un numero de segmentos homogéneos y comparables entre muestras.
Los segmentos del molde se usan como guías en el registro de puntos para capturar la curva del contorno en vista de la ausencia de marcas naturales.

El molde guía mas sencillo puede construirse con un"abanico" o un "peine". Un "abanico" divide el contorno mediante "n" radios espaciados a un ángulo homogéneo entre tres marcas. Un "peine" segmenta el contorno usando "n" lineas paralelas dibujadas perpendicularmente a un eje entre dos marcas.

MakeFan es para Windows y funciona muy bien en Linux (Ubuntu). Lo pueden bajar "gratis" aqui >>>

A Morphometrics workshop will be held at the Universidad de Chile, Santiago, Chile from October 24 to 26, 2011.
The aim of this 3-days workshop is to provide the opportunity to undergraduate and postgraduate students from Anthropology, Archaeology and Biomedical Sciences from Chilean and South-American universities to attend lectures dictated by worldwide recognized researchers in quantitative analysis of shape: Professor Paul O’Higgins from University of York, Dr. Chris Klingenberg from University of Manchester, and Dr. Martin Friess, from MNHN, Paris.
The workshop is limited to 20 participants and is free of charge.

Attendees are expected to have previous experience using geometric morphometrics. By the end of the workshop students will present (10-15 minutes, power point aid) the skills they developed applied to their own projects.

Limits and potentiality of geometric morphometrics
in plant systematics

Geometric morphometrics methods started to be
developed in the late 1980s. During the 1990s, it showed
a remarkable qualitative and quantitative development,
thanks to the increased understanding of the theoretical
basis that underlie the methodologies, the development of
protocols of analysis, and the consequent increase in
published works that referred to these methods,
especially in Zoology and Anthropology. During this
time progress in botanical applications has been marginal
indicating a reluctance to accept new methods for
morphometric analysis. While we cannot exclude a
certain cultural inertia by botanists, it is undoubtedly true
that the study material of botanists, i.e. plants, is usually
less suitable for the application of geometric
morphometric techniques. However, in recent years,
experiments carried out by botanists gave a glimpse of
how these techniques can offer considerable support to
systematic studies in Botany. This presentation will first
analyze the main difficulties related to the use of
geometric morphometric techniques with plants, with
particular reference to the method of landmarks; limits
we need to be aware of for a correct application of these
methodologies and interpretation of results. The
presentation will then move on to the observation of
situations where geometric morphometric techniques
showed significant potential for exploration and/or
interpretation in plant Systematics.

The use of geometric morphometrics in evolutionary
studies

A discussion of some of the statistical properties of shape
data provided by geometric morphometric studies as well
as some of its limitations for use in taxonomic and
evolutionary studies will be presented. While in many
ways there is nothing special about the multivariate
analysis of such multivariate data, such data does have to
be treated properly. An important property of such data is
that it makes possible new ways of visualizing the results
of multivariate analyses.

Integrating morphometric and phylogenetic analyses:
from phenetic systematics to phylogenetic
morphometrics

The role of morphometric analyses in plant systematics
has stirred mixed reactions. Applications such as
discriminant analyses for taxon identification, or fitting
morphometric data to a phylogeny to estimate ancestral
shapes and changes along nodes on the tree do not seem
controversial. What remains unsettled is if morphometric
analyses should help and how in decisions about
characters, definition of character states, and for
taxonomic grouping. Morphometric studies can be a
strong basis for phylogenetic reconstructions. A sound
integration of morphometric data in phylogenetic
analyses is by the use of multivariate methods not for the
circumscription of taxa, as in a phenetic approach, but for
questions about character homology and monophyly. A
double path is now open for the integration of
morphometrics into phylogenetic analyses depending on
what is considered as 'cladistic character' and how to
analyze continuous patterns of variation in morphological
variables. The first question is what counts as character
data: whole shape, separate modules, partial warps,
relative warps? The second question is whether variation
must be partitioned and coded as discrete states or is
analyzed as continuous data. We argue for a need to
move from phenetic systematics to phylogenetic
morphometrics. We can now integrate very nicely
morphometric data into into phylogenetic reconstructions
of monophyletic groups by using continuous characters
and landmark data without coding or transformation.
Empirical tests show that the use of relative warp scores,
either means or ranges as continuous characters, are to be
preferred for phylogenetic analyses based on criteria of
concordance with non morphometric trees, levels of
homoplasy, and clade resolution/support.

Reconstructing ancestral floral shape using geometric
morphometrics: a test of the pollinator shift
hypothesis

Variation in floral shape has been used for centuries as a
diagnostic tool in plant systematics. The absence of
adequate methods to quantify floral shape, however, has
inhibited research into the underlying evolutionary
processes that generate this variation. The recent
developments of a rigorous statistical framework for
comparative analyses of shape, and the ability to produce
3D reconstructions of flowers with complex shapes, have
opened the door for addressing a wide variety of
evolutionary questions involving floral shape. We
explored the role of pollinators in the evolution of floral
shape variation in the orchid genus Satyrium, the species
of which have remarkably complex flowers, which are
characterized by specialized interactions with a wide
variety of insect and bird pollinators. We produced 3D
reconstructions of flowers using microCT scanning and
obtained 40 homologous landmarks and semi-landmarks.
A principal components analysis of a data set in which
size was removed by translation, rotation and scaling,
showed that species with the same pollinator have highly
similar shapes. To remove potentially confounding
phylogenetic effects, we first reconstructed ancestral
shapes onto an ultrametric tree by applying squared
parsimony to the procrust coordinates. We then
calculated the rate of evolution of shape by calculating
the Euclidean distance between reconstructed shapes at
the base and tip of individual branches, and by dividing
this by the branch length. Finally, we reconstructed
pollinator shifts onto the branches of the phylogenetic
tree. We found that the rate of morphological evolution is
significantly elevated in branches where there is an
unambiguous optimisation of pollinator shifts, compared
to branches where there is unambiguously no pollinator
shift, thus confirming the long-standing notion that
pollinators have played an important role in the
diversification of angiosperm floral shape. Although our
analysis is intuitively appealing, it assumes that, in the
absence of selection, evolution of quantitative traits
occurs according to a model of Brownian motion. Our
initial finding of strong similarity among species with the
same pollinator, however, suggested that floral shape is a
highly adaptive trait. This begs the question whether it is
valid to use a model of essentially neutral evolution for
the reconstruction of ancestral floral shape. Closer
examination of ancestral shapes showed that in cases of a
pollinator shift between sister taxa, the shape of the
immediate ancestor was intermediate as expected from
Brownian motion. These intermediate shapes sometimes
fell outside any of the well-defined, pollinator-specific
clusters in the principal components analysis. This means
either that these 'hybrid' shapes may be unfit, or that they
represent adaptations to unknown pollinators. Either of
these possibilities poses a challenge to accurate
evolutionary analyses. The development of alternative
models of evolution that allow for incorporation of
adaptive peaks, such as Ornstein-Uhlenbeck models for
multivariate traits, would provide a solution to this
problem. Nevertheless, we believe that our novel
approach of analyzing geometric morphometric data in a
phylogenetic and ecological context holds great promise
and represents a first step towards quantitative
approaches to addressing long-standing evolutionary
hypotheses.

El objetivo del taller es introducir al participante en los aspectos básicos de la teoría de la forma, del flujo de trabajo de la MG y a las plataformas para realizar los análisis.

Inicialmente el curso esta limitado a 15 participantes y bajo los criterios de inscripción de la AMAB (Asociación Mexicana de Antropología Biológica A. C.)

La morfometría geométrica, definida como la unión de la geometría y la biología, es una metodología que en últimos años a revolucionado el análisis de las formas biológicas. La aplicación en la biología antropológica abarca diversos temas como la evolución fenotípica, ontogenia, variación morfológica, inferencia filogenética, integración morfológica, genética cuantitativa, etc.

El uso de puntos (2 o 3D) antomofuncionales como método de registro de la forma, a diferencia de las distancias lineales empleadas en la morfometría clásica (MC), plantea un nuevo enfoque en el análisis de la variación fenotípica humana.

La MG en combinación con análisis de la estadística multivariante permite una mejor estimación de los procesos biológicos operantes sobre una morfología determinada.

Mediciones arregladas de Morton o argumentos mañosos de Gould?

Recién (Junio 7, 2011) se ha publicado un articulo sobre el caso de las mediciones de los cráneos humanos de Morton (izq) y el re-análisis de esos datos por Gould (der). Seguramente es mas famoso el re-análisis, pues el libro The Mismeasure of Man [ref] es una lectura asignada en muchas de nuestras clases universitarias.
El articulo en cuestión es un buen ejercicio de nuestras capacidades de análisis. Se los recomiendo!

Geometric morphometric was proclaimed as the 'morphometric revolution' in 1993, because it substantially improved statistical methods available for morphological analyses in systematic zoology. This is not the case for plant systematic, mainly because of problems in applying such methodologies to plant samples, such as the recognition of homologous points and the often extreme phenotypic variability in plants. Recently, a growing body of research is demonstrating that using digital image-based morphometric will meet increasing application even in plant systematics, taxonomy and evolution. The symposium will consider different approaches, and achievements in geometric morphometric applied to different research fields of systematic botany.

Un curso en Morfometría Geométrica y Filogenia celebrado en el Institut Català de Paleontologia durante el mes de abril, brinda una oportunidad única a investigadores de estas disciplinas para perfilar su estudio, a través de una puesta en común de las problemáticas y las mejoras particulares con las que se encuentran en su día a día.

El Dr. Chris Klingenberg, de la Universidad de Manchester, Inglaterra, con la colaboración de su doctoranda, Emma Sherratt, impartió un curso intensivo de tres días donde se explicaron las técnicas más punteras en la aplicación del método comparativo filogenético a datos de Morfometría Geométrica.

La Morfometría Geométrica, técnica que permite estudiar y cuantificar la forma de los objetos de estudio de una manera precisa, es relativamente reciente. Su desarrollo tuvo lugar a mediados de los 80 para dar respuesta a la problemática asociada a la realización de medidas individuales a la hora de comparar muestras, ya que no era posible cuantificar la forma de un objeto, sino sólo sus partes para separado, es decir, sus medidas. A través de lo que los expertos denominan 'landmarks' o puntos de referencia predefinidos, se analiza la forma y su geometría, lo que posteriormente permitirá analizar y comparar la forma de diversos ejemplares de una manera mucho más completa que sólo con medidas. Simplificando mucho y para entendernos, los puntos de referencia son como los números que unimos en los pasatiempos para obtener un dibujo final, con la ventaja de que los programas informáticos permiten 'dibujar' en 3D de una forma muy precisa.

Exposición de los resultados de uno de los participantes

La ventaja de la técnica es que cuantifica la forma como un todo, evitando las dificultades interpretativas que se obtienen los resultados aislados. Facilita además la separación de los efectos del tamaño y la forma, característica que ayuda a realizar comparativas más precisas entre diferentes muestras de manera que se obtienen resultados muchos más fiables.

Desde mediados de los 80 también se ha llamado la atención sobre la aplicación de las técnicas estadísticas a los análisis de diferentes especies. La principal asunción de cualquier metodología estadística es que las muestras bajo estudio son independientes entre sí. Sin embargo, cuando en el material de estudio hay diferentes especies, esta asunción no se cumple, ya que las especies están relacionadas entre sí filogenéticamente, es decir, se relacionan entre ellas como lo hacen los miembros de una familia, y algunas especies están más emparentadas entre ellas que otras. Por esta razón en las últimas dos décadas se ha desarrollado el método comparativo filogenético, que consiste básicamente en eliminar, o tener en cuenta, el efecto de la filogenia, es decir, el parentesco entre especies, al realizar los análisis. Sin embargo, estas técnicas se han aplicado mayoritariamente a datos tradicionales, las medidas, y su aplicación a datos procedentes de la Morfometría Geométrica es prácticamente una novedad, ya que existen muy pocos programas que lo hagan.

Asistentes al curso aplicando la nueva metodología durante una práctica

El Dr. Klingenberg, además de explicar la parte teórica de esta problemática, enseñó a los asistentes al curso la aplicación de esta metodología, con un programa de sotware libre, desarrollado por él, el MorphoJ, de forma totalmente novedosa, ya que este módulo acaba de ser incorporado al programa.

No es la primera vez que ambas disciplinas se aplican conjuntamente para obtener resultados más fiables y completos, pero sí una de las pocas veces que se organiza un curso de este tipo en Europa que permita reunir a los profesionales que se dedican a ello , sobre un mismo escenario.

La iniciativa liderada por el ICP, ha sido, además, todo un éxito participativo ya que la demandas superaron con creces la oferta y contaron con la presencia de investigadores de una decena de países.

The relationship between masculinity and attractiveness was assessed in two samples of male faces. Most previous research has assessed masculinity either with subjective ratings or with simple anatomical measures. Here, we used geometric morphometric techniques to assess facial masculinity, generating a morphological masculinity measure based on a discriminant function that correctly classified >96% faces as male or female. When assessed using this measure, there was no relationship between morphological masculinity and rated attractiveness. In contrast, skin colour – a fluctuating, condition-dependent cue – was a significant predictor of attractiveness.

New Software Brings Facial-Recognition Technology to Mobile Phones

ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2010) — Scientists at The University of Manchester have developed software for mobile phones that can track your facial features in real-time. Eventually it will be able to tell who the user is, where they are looking and even how they are feeling.
The method is believed to be unrivalled for speed and accuracy and could lead to facial recognition replacing passwords and PIN numbers to log into internet sites from a mobile phone.

"Existing mobile face trackers give only an approximate position and scale of the face," said Dr Phil Tresadern, lead researcher on the project. "Our model runs in real-time and accurately tracks a number of landmarks on and around the face such as the eyes, nose, mouth and jaw line.

"A mobile phone with a camera on the front captures a video of your face and tracks twenty-two facial features. This can make face recognition more accurate, and has great potential for novel ways of interacting with your phone."

Originally intended as part of a face- and voice-verification system for access to mobile internet applications such as email, social networking and online banking, alternative uses for the device could include fun applications that, for instance, attach virtual objects to the user's face as they move around.

"At this stage, we're particularly interested in demonstrating uses for the face-tracking part of the technology, which is the area The University of Manchester is involved in," said Dr Tresadern, who is based in Manchester's School of Cancer and Enabling Sciences. "It is very fast and I can't find anything that can rival it on a mobile phone."

Face verification is already used in laptops, webcams and the Xbox 360 Kinect but this is the first time the technology is being used with such sophistication in mobile devices such as smartphones.

The new software, built on 20 years of research at the University, has been demonstrated on a Nokia N900 for the EU-funded "Mobile Biometrics" (MoBio) project.

1. Las cámaras fotográficas digitales (p.ej. Nickon) que se colocan sobre los microscopios ópticos (p.e. Olympus) para capturar imágenes con lentes de 10X, 20X, 40X ó 100X, deben de estar colocadas a una determinada altura entre el microscopio y la cámara?

2. ¿Se requieren de una lente especial entre los tubos que soportan la cámara fotografíca y el tubo que se adapta al microscopio?

Pomacentridae are one of the most abundant fish families inhabiting reefs of tropical and temperate regions. This family, comprising 29 genera, shows a remarkable diversity of habitat preferences, feeding and behaviors. Twenty-four species belonging to seven genera have been reported in the Eastern Pacific region. This study focuses on the relationship between the diet and the cephalic profile in the 24 endemic damselfishes of this region. Feeding habits were determined by means of underwater observations and the gathering of bibliographic data. Variations in cephalic profile were analyzed by means of geometric morphometrics and phylogenetic methods. The present study shows that the 24 species can be grouped into three main trophic guilds: zooplanktivores, algivores and an intermediate group feeding on small pelagic and benthic preys. Shape variations were low within each genus except Abudefduf. Phylogenetically adjusted regression reveals that head shape can be explained by differences in feeding habits. Our morphometric phylogeny recovered the subfamily Stegastinae and the relationship between A. troschelii and Chromis species. The cephalic profile of damselfishes contains a clear and strong phylogenetic signal.

Shell shape variation in populations of Mytilus chilensis (Hupe 1854) from southern Chile: a geometric morphometric approach

Abstract
The pattern of shell shape variation in populations of the mussel, Mytilus chilensis (Hupe 1854) from Southern Chile was analyzed as a function of sample origin (cultivated vs. wild) and latitude, using standard tools of geometric morphometrics for landmark data. Additionally, posterior adductor muscle index (PAMI), Freeman condition index and shell thickness were measured in each sample. Highly significant differences in shell shape components were found among mussel populations. These differences are related to the origin of samples (expansion of the posterior adductor muscle scar, elongation of the lateral ligament and of the ventral umbo position in non-cultivated samples) and to latitude (more elongated shells and more extended posterior adductor muscle scar in most southern samples when compared with the northernmost ones). PAMI and shell thickness were statistically higher in wild population, and Freeman condition index was higher in cultivated shells. It is suggested that in wild populations of M. chilensis, the mussels may face higher predator pressures and other environmental stress factors. Consequently, individuals may be using higher energy fraction to reinforce shells and to promote adductor muscle growth at the expense of somatic growth. In contrast, individuals found in calm aquaculture environments are relatively protected from predators and use most of their assimilated energy in somatic growth. In turn, this growth depends on changes that covariate with shell morphology.

a four day workshop in York 11-14 October 2010

The course is aimed at postgraduates who already have some insight into GMM but may not have yet used these methods. During the four days of the course the basics of geometric morphometrics will be covered and key multivariate morphometric methods reviewed. Frequent examples will be presented using available GMM software and students will gain experience in using different software tools during the course of each afternoon's practical sessions using datasets we will provide.

Morphological traits have long been a focus of evolutionary developmental biology ('evo-devo'), but new methods for quantifying shape variation are opening unprecedented possibilities for investigating the developmental basis of evolutionary change. Morphometric analyses are revealing that development mediates complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors affecting shape. Evolution results from changes in those interactions, as natural selection favours shapes that more effectively perform some fitness-related functions. Quantitative studies of shape can characterize developmental and genetic effects and discover their relative importance. They integrate evo-devo and related disciplines into a coherent understanding of evolutionary processes from populations to large-scale evolutionary radiations.

Abstract (provisional)

A major goal in evolutionary biology is to understand the evolution of phenotypic diversity. Both natural and sexual selection play a large role in generating phenotypic adaptations, with biomechanical requirements and developmental mechanisms mediating patterns of phenotypic evolution. For many traits, the relative importance of selective and developmental components remains understudied.

We investigated ontogenetic trajectories of foot morphology in the eight species of European plethodontid cave salamander to test the hypothesis that adult foot morphology was adapted for climbing. Using geometric morphometrics and other approaches, we found that developmental patterns in five species displayed little morphological change during growth (isometry), where the extensive interdigital webbing in adults was best explained as the retention of the juvenile morphological state. By contrast, three species exhibited significant allometry, with an increase in interdigital webbing during growth. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that multiple evolutionary transitions between isometry and allometry of foot webbing have occurred in this lineage. Allometric parameters of foot growth were most similar to those of a tropical species previously shown to be adapted for climbing. Finally, interspecific variation in adult foot morphology was significantly reduced as compared to variation among juveniles, indicating that ontogenetic convergence had resulted in a common adult foot morphology across species.

The results presented here provide evidence of a complex history of phenotypic evolution in this clade. The common adult phenotype exhibited among species reveals that selection plays an important part in generating patterns of foot diversity in the group. However, developmental trajectories arriving at this common morphology are distinct; with some species displaying developmental stasis (isometry), while others show an increase in foot webbing during growth. Thus, multiple developmental solutions exist to the same evolutionary challenge. Our findings underscore the importance of examining morphological adaptations from multiple perspectives, and emphasize that both selective hypotheses and developmental processes must be considered for a more comprehensive understanding of phenotypic evolution.

Concluyó el curso de Morfometría (ed 2) en la UAM Mex DF

La Jefa del Departamento de Biología, la Dra. Sara Lucía Camargo Ricalde inauguró y clausuró formalmente el curso de posgrado: Introducción a la Morfometría Geométrica (Edición 2) en la UAM Iztapalapa, Mexico DF.

Participaron 25 estudiantes e investigadores de varias instituciones.

El Jueves por la noche cenamos como grupo en un restaurant en Plaza Tezontle, cerca de la UAM.

Despues de recibir nuestras constancias de participación, el curso fue formalmente clausurado el viernes 23 por la tarde.

Agradecimientos:
El curso fue avalado por el Consejo Divisional de Ciencias Biológicas y de la Salud. Su Director y Presidente, Dr. Rubén Román, también apoyó la estancia de los profesores invitados (parte de los alimentos).
La Dra. Sara Lucía Camargo Ricalde, Jefa del Departamento de Biología, nos apoyó con lo que faltó cubrir con el presupuesto y con lo necesario para la logística del curso. Ella nos dedicó unas motivantes palabras de bienvenida y cerró el curso.

Para coordinar la parte administrativa (pagos), recibimos el apoyo de la Lic. Marisela Rodríguez, asistente administrativa del Departamento de Biología. También en el Departamento de Biología, la Sra. Laura Almaraz nos apoyó con la impresión de certificados y constancias.

Además, para la transportación de los profesores invitados durante el curso, así como de los alumnos para los eventos sociales que surgieron, la Secretaría Unitaria, por medio de la Lic. Araceli Guerrero, Asistente de la Secretaría, y el Lic. Eliseo Camberos, Coordinador de Comunicaciones y Transportes, nos facilitó vehículos que condujeron los Srs. choferes Luis Antonio Luna Pineda y Miguel Ángel Canseco Martínez.

En cuanto a la red inalámbrica, Coordinación de Cómputo, a través de la Sra. Marilú Rasgado de Atención a Usuarios, nos instalaron cuentas temporales durante el curso.
La Coordinación de Vinculación Académica se encargó de los trámites oficiales para los certificados con validez oficial que se entregaron a los alumnos, así como de las constancias para profesores, a través de las Lic. Judith Altamriano y Lic. Melina Martínez. Pero además el Mtro. Salvador Assenato, Coordinador de COVIA, nos apoyó en los gastos de traslado hacia las instituciones de origen de los profesores invitados.

Finalmente, gracias a las cuotas de los alumnos, fue posible alojar a los profesores invitados.

Pero una manera que ha resultado efectiva en ocasiones anteriores es hacerlo en linea y todos leemos la "presentación" de cada quién. Espero cooperen participando en esta actividad.

Proyecto:Análisis ecomorfológico del aparato masticatorio de Myotis vivesi (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae)

Myotis vivesi es una especie endémica del golfo de California que se distribuye en las islas y en menor proporción en las costas del golfo, donde se alimenta de crustáceos y peces (Blood y Clark, 1998). Esta especie presenta adaptaciones para atrapar presas de la superficie del agua, observadas en otras especies pescadoras no relacionadas filogenéticamente, por lo que tales adaptaciones se consideran convergencias evolutivas (Stadelman et al., 2004). El gran tamaño corporal, largas extremidades inferiores, y pies con garras alargadas y lateralmente comprimidas han sido consideradas como adaptaciones a este tipo de dieta (Hood y Jones, 1984; Blood and Clark, 1998).

Aunque Myotis vivesi es la especie pescadora que exhibe mayor diferenciación tanto en su morfología como en su ecología (Blood y Clark 1998), en el viejo mundo se han reportado especies que consumen peces cuando la oferta de insectos disminuye, por lo cual son piscívoras oportunistas, como es el caso de M. daubentonii y M. capaccinii (Siemers et al., 2001). Entre estas especies existen similitudes ecológicas y características morfológicas externas consideradas como convergencias evolutivas dentro del género (Stadelman et al 2004).

Myotis vivesi podría aportar evidencia para aclarar el origen de la piscívoria, siendo considerada una innovación evolutiva reciente de los insectívoros (Lewis-Oritt et al., 2001). Aunque se han planteado algunas características morfológicas externas de la especies como convergencias evolutivas a partir de la dieta, no se ha analizado la estructura del aparato masticatorio, por lo cual plantearon las siguientes preguntas: ¿existen características convergentes en la morfología craneal entre M. vivesi y otras especies piscívoras?, y ¿tienen estas características una relevancia funcional asociada a la dieta?

Debido a que la mandíbula juega un papel crucial en el desempeño en la dieta (Turnbull, 1970; Nogueira et al., 2005), fue considerada para estudiar la variación morfológica en relación a cambios en la dieta. Para esto se analizaron los rasgos morfológicos que reflejan la posición de los músculos, como son la desviación del proceso angular y la posición de los procesos coronoide y cóndilar (Matthew, 1920; Emerson y Radinsky, 1980; Freeman, 1998; Dumont y Herrel, 2003). Los procesos son importantes porque constituyen no solo los sitios de inserción muscular sino también los brazos de los músculos Temporal y Masetero, que son representados por las distancias entre ellos (Emerson y Radinsky, 1980; Freeman, 1998; Nogueira et al., 2005).

Estos rasgos solo han sido estudiados usando mediciones lineares, por esta razón la morfometría geométrica representa la posibilidad de estudiar la variación de la forma en conjunto. Se implementó esta metodología para responder las preguntas planteadas anteriormente. Se estudio la variación en M. vivesi respecto a sus congéneres insectívoros M. velifer y M. keaysi, además se estudiaron posibles paralelismos morfológicos entre M. vivesi y sus congéneres piscívoros facultativos M. capaccinii y M. daubentonii, así como la especie piscívora N. leporinus (Noctilionidae).

Se utilizaron las fotografías de las mandíbulas en vista lateral derecha de los especimenes y se ubicaron 5 puntos anatómicos de referencia (PAR), considerando los procesos y la posición de la fila dental y 21 semi puntos anatómicos de referencia para evaluar la variación en el contorno de la estructura (figura 1). Para aumentar la precisión en la ubicación de los “semipuntos anatómicos de referencia” se usaron abanicos y peines que abarcaron la mandíbula en contorno, para este procedimiento se usó el programa MakeFan 6 (Sheets et al., 2002).

De la ubicación de los PAR y los semi PAR sobre cada fotografía de la mandíbula, se obtuvieron las configuraciones geométricas como coordenadas en un plano bidimensional y se depuró la matriz de datos. Para eliminar la variación no biológica contenida en los datos de la matriz, se realizó el Análisis Generalizado Procustes (AGP). Las distancias entre los PAR en una conformación y los PAR correspondientes en la configuración consenso después del ajuste por el AGP, describen la variación de cada individuo respecto al consenso en un espacio multidimensional, el espacio Curvo de Kendall (De moraes et al., 2003). Este espacio multidimensional no permite usar las variables de conformación para hacer análisis estadísticos multivariados, por lo cual se proyectaron las configuraciones superpuestas sobre un hiperplano tangente a la configuración consenso, y con ayuda de la función matemática tps (deformación de placas delgadas: “thin plate spline”), fue posible visualizar la deformación de los especimenes respecto a la configuración consenso (Rohlf 1990).

El AGP y la obtención de las conformaciones proyectadas se logró con el programa Tps Relw (Rolfh, 2005). A partir de esta nueva matriz de conformaciones se realizaron los análisis exploratorios para comparar la variación morfológica entre los sexos y las especies. Además se realizó un Análisis Canónico de variables (CVA) para probar la separación entre las especies (Figura 2), ya que los ejes canónicos permiten ver qué tan alejados están los grupos en el espacio multivariado, maximizando la variación. Se graficó esta separación y se evaluó cuales ejes fueron estadísticamente significativos mediante una MANOVA, usando el programa CVAgen6o (Sheets 2002).

A partir de los análisis exploratorios (Relative Waro análisis) se obtuvieron los promedios de los dos primeros ejes para cada especie y con ayuda de la función TPS, la deformación para las conformaciones de cada especie respecto a una configuración consenso. Debido a que existe un solapamiento entre las especies insectívoras y piscívoras facultativas, se observo la deformación de las especies piscívoras con respecto a un consenso entre las primeras, mediante el programa TwoGroup6h (Sheets 2000) (Figura 3 y 4).

Aunque no se encontraron paralelismos entre las especies piscívoras, los análisis muestran que M. vivesi exhibe cambios en la morfología mandibular respecto a las especies insectívoras y piscívoras facultativas consideradas en este estudio. La separación observada para la especie piscívora es un indicio de diferentes respuestas al cambio de dieta en este grupo de especies, por lo cual es necesario continuar investigando la evolución de la piscívoria. Para este propósito la morfometría geométrica promete ser una herramienta útil y podría revelar incluso tendencias que no podrían ser encontradas a partir de la morfometría tradicional.

Formal spaces have become commonplace conceptual and computational tools in a large array of scientific disciplines, including both the natural and the social sciences. Morphological spaces (morphospaces) are spaces describing and relating organismal phenotypes. They play a central role in morphometrics, the statistical description of biological forms, but also underlie the notion of adaptive landscapes that drives many theoretical considerations in evolutionary biology. We briefly review the topological and geometrical properties of the most common morphospaces in the biological literature. In contemporary geometric morphometrics, the notion of a morphospace is based on the Euclidean tangent space to Kendall's shape space, which is a Riemannian manifold. Many more classical morphospaces, such as Raup's space of coiled shells, lack these metric properties, e.g., due to incommensurably scaled variables, so that these morphospaces typically are affine vector spaces. Other notions of a morphospace, like Thomas and Reif's (1993) skeleton space, may not give rise to a quantitative measure of similarity at all. Such spaces can often be characterized in terms of topological or pretopological spaces.

The typical language of theoretical and evolutionary biology, comprising statements about the “distance” among phenotypes in an according space or about different “directions” of evolution, is not warranted for all types of morphospaces. Graphical visualizations of morphospaces or adaptive landscapes may tempt the reader to apply “Euclidean intuitions” to a morphospace, whatever its actual topology might be. We discuss the limits of metaphors such as the developmental hourglass and adaptive landscapes that ensue from the geometric properties of the underlying morphospace.

ScienceDaily (Dec. 17, 2009) — Beauty is not only in the eye of the beholder but also in the relationship of the eyes and mouth of the beholden. The distance between a woman's eyes and the distance between her eyes and her mouth are key factors in determining how attractive she is to others, according to new psychology research from the University of California, San Diego and the University of Toronto.

Female faces were judged more attractive when the vertical distance between their eyes and the mouth was approximately 36 percent of the face's length, and the horizontal distance between their eyes was approximately 46 percent of the face's width.

Interestingly, these proportions correspond with those of an average face.

Comparing patterns of divergence among separate lineages or groups has posed an especially difficult challenge for biologists. Recently a new, conceptually simple methodology called the “ordered-axis plot” approach was introduced for the purpose of comparing patterns of diversity in a common morphospace. This technique involves a combination of principal components analysis (PCA) and linear regression. Given the common use of these statistics the potential for the widespread use of the ordered axis approach is high. However, there are a number of drawbacks to this approach, most notably that lineages with the greatest amount of variance will largely bias interpretations from analyses involving a common morphospace. Therefore, without meeting a set of a priori requirements regarding data structure the ordered-axis plot approach will likely produce misleading results.

Ordered axis plots may not be able to discriminate between patterns of morphological diversity along axes of a multidimensional morphospace because of its reliance upon principal components analysis and the inherent biases of this method. Here the aspects of diversity parallel to PC1 are highlighted with a red arrow for each group of interest. Note that the length of most variable group (pink) is parallel to PC1 because it has the greatest influence over the determination of PC1 in this common morphospace. Other less variable groups (blue, green) have less influence over the trajectory of PC1, but still possess variation that lies parallel to PC1. However the greatest axis of variation within these less variable groups may lie along a vector that differs from PC1. Without knowing a priori whether axes of variation among distinct groups are similar, it is impossible to know the degree to which an ordered axis plots approach will yield misleading results.

Desarrollan un sistema de biometría facial que crea un "DNI" del rostro

Una investigación en técnicas de biometría facial realizada por científicos de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) desarrolla un sistema que reconoce un “DNI” del rostro de cada persona con las características más reseñables de su cara con una precisión de hasta un 95 por ciento.

Las técnicas de reconocimiento basadas en los rasgos del rostro, conocidas como biometría facial, suelen basarse en la búsqueda de las diferencias que presenta la cara de una persona con respecto a todas las demás. La investigación que han realizado estos investigadores, en cambio, aborda el problema desde un punto de vista un poco distinto. “La diferencia entre nuestro trabajo y la mayoría de los que aparecen en este campo es la idea de modelos individualizados”, explica uno de los autores de la investigación, el matemático David Delgado Gómez, del Departamento de Estadística de la UC3M. “Nuestro objetivo - continúa - es crear un modelo para cada persona que remarque las características más discriminantes de cada rostro, como una especie de ‘DNI’ facial”.

GEOMETRIC MORPHOMETRICS IN ARCHAEOZOOLOGY: APPLICATIONS AND PERSPECTIVES

The 11th ICAZ International Conference of ICAZ (International Council for Archaeozoology) will take place in Paris, from 23 to 28 August 2010.

The main objectives of the conference are to:

promote archaeozoology (zooarchaeology) as a domain of study that provides increasingly important contributions to both prehistoric and historical archaeology and to the history of biodiversity;
strengthen interactions between archaeozoologists from all continents, in particular those who find themselves in situations of partial isolation. The 2010 conference will particularly focus on giving voice to and generating closer links with archaeozoologists based in Central/Eastern Europe and Asia, without neglecting Latin America, where the previous ICAZ Conference took place;
promote the archaeozoological study of hunter-gatherers societies.

Scientific Session on Geometric Morphometrics
Morphometrics, which study variations and changes in the form (size and shape) of an organism or an object, is one of the main techniques used in archaeozoology to extract biological information from animal remains. Morphometric technics in archaeozoology have mainly relied on combined uni/multivariate statistics and quantitative morphology based on linear measurements. Although useful, traditional morphometrics face several limitations (size correction, absence of homology in the linear distance, difficulty to capture geometry of complex shape, absence of graphical representation of shape changes) and prevent the addressing of old research questions and therefore the meeting of new challenges in bioarchaeology.

The so called “revolution” of Geometric Morphometrics in Biological science and Physical Anthropology during the 90’s has now addressed these issues by providing a new statistical theory to not only capture and retain the geometry of an object throughout the analyses but also to allow the visualization of its changes. These advances provide an opportunity to see if i) this revolution has helped archaeozoology to reach new insights into old questions; ii) to evidence the limits of its application on animal remains and iii) to identify the new directions in the field of archaeozoology within the following topics:

► Biogeography.

► Ecomorphology and Phylogeny.

► Taxonomy and chronospecies.

► Domestication.

► Ontogeny.

The objective is to get researchers together in order to investigate possibilities and limitations of GM applications to tackle complex biological questions with osteoarchaeological remains and therefore widen the fields of investigation in archaeozoology.

Geometric morphometrics (GM) has become the most used statistical tool in exploring size and shape variation in a variety of disciplines, from forensic anthropology to evolutionary paleobiology. Several workshops have been organized in order to introduce GM techniques.
However there is a need for advanced courses focused on specific research fields. The Geometric Morphometrics Laboratory for Systematics and Evolutionary researches is an advanced course addressed to PhD students and researchers already skilled on basic GM techniques and statistics.
The course will be devoted to GM tools for systematics and evolutionary researches. Lessons will focus on advanced GM data analyses, such as PLS, comparative methods, ontogenetic allometry, modularity, semilandmarks and outlines, including 3D data. The course will include morning and afternoon lessons followed by lab.

Proyecto de la morfometria del subgénero Megaluracarus Viets, (Acari: Hydracarina: Arrenuridae: Arrenurus)

Los ácaros dulceacuícolas o hidracáridos constituyen el grupo de quelicerados acuáticos más diverso, su riqueza se explica en parte por la coevolución con diferentes grupos de insectos acuáticos a los que parasitan y/o depredan, así como por la capacidad de dispersión que éstos les confieren (Smith et al., 2001).
El género Arrenurus Dugès (Hydrachnidia: Arrenuridae) es el grupo más grande de ácaros dulceacuícolas con alrededor de mil especies descritas (Cook et al., 1989); su evolución ha dado como resultado varios grados de dimorfismo sexual, con base en lo cual se ha dividido en nueve subgéneros. Entre éstos, Megaluracarus, ya que está constituido por alrededor de 260 especies, de las cuáles 190 se distribuyen en América (Rosso de Ferradás y Hernández, 2005; Cook, 1980; Cramer y Cook, 1992). En México, se han registrado 18 especies de dicho subgénero (Cook, 1980; Cramer y Cook, 1992; Rivas y Cramer, 1998), varias de ellas cohabitando en el mismo cuerpo de agua, en estos casos, se ha observado que las diferencias morfológicas entre los machos de algunas especies son casi graduales (obs. pers.).
En este sentido, los análisis morfométricos son una herramienta muy útil ya que permiten detectar diferencias sutiles entre las especies. Dichas distinciones suelen ser factibles de interpretar biológicamente, lo cual puede incrementar la precisión y resolución de posteriores análisis filogenéticos y faunísticos a gran escala (Budd et al., 1994; Cazorla y Acosta, 2003; Grobler et al., 2006; Reuschel y Shubart, 2006).
Este proyecto constituye el primer análisis morfométrico de la forma del cuerpo en un grupo de ácaros dulceacuícolas. Se espera que los resultados permitan elaborar hipótesis sobre distintos aspectos de su biología, como su diversidad y su distribución. Se ha revisado la bibliografía referente a la descripción de las especies del género Arrenurus. Preliminarmente, se han encontrado 260 especies del subgénero Megaluracarus descritas a nivel mundial, de las cuales 191 se han descrito para el continente americano. Para 96 de éstas especies, se ha obtenido la imagen digitalizada de la vista dorsal del cuerpo de los machos, escaneada a partir de las descripciones originales (Fig. 1). Las principales diferencias en la forma del cuerpo o idiosoma de los machos de Megaluracarus, se observan en la parte posterior o cauda: puede ser corta o larga, redonda o angulosa, o presentar protuberancias; la parte anterior del cuerpo a veces puede presentar proyecciones semejantes a cuernos o bien ser redondeada.

La idea básica de realizar esta exploración de la forma, es confirmar, si como se ha observado a simple vista, existen especies que comparten una forma básica, es decir, si se conforman grupos de formas; y por otra parte tratar de dilucidar si dichas formas reflejan algún tipo de patrón biológico (p. ej. a nivel biogeográfico, ecológico o evolutivo).

Según la forma de la parte anterior del idiosoma y el largo y forma de la cauda, las 96 especies se repartieron en seis diferentes grupos. La primera parte de este proyecto consiste en hacer un análisis morfométrico prospectivo de cuatro grupos de especies.

Una dificultad a resolver es que el contorno corporal en vista dorsal no presenta marcas que puedan considerarse homólogas, por lo que se esta experimentando con la definicion de seudomarcas (Fig. 2) utilizando MakeFan (Integrated Morphometric Package, IMP). Se digitalizaron las coordenadas "x,y" de 44 seudomarcas con TPSDig. Las configuraciones de seudomarcas de cada especie fueron alineadas con la superimposición Procustes (PS) en CoordGen (IMP). Las semimarcas deben ser alineadas a lo largo de sus curvas parciales respectivas, para esto se utilizó Semiland6 (IMP). Para generar las variables de forma (Partial Warps) se utilizó la aproximación thin-plate spline (TPS).

Los analisis multivariados consistieron en Analisis de Componentes Principales (PCA) y Analisis de Variables Canonicas (CVA). Para observar las tendencias generales en la variación de la forma del idiosoma en vista dorsal de Megaluracarus, los datos fueron analizados con PCAGen6 (IMP). Para discriminar entre sí a los cuatro grupos analizados, se utilizó CVAGen6 (IMP). Para evaluar la significancia de las diferencias en la forma por pares de grupos, se utilizó TwoGroup6 (IMP).

Considero que las pseudomarcas, en el caso de la forma de Megaluracarus, son una técnica bastante útil, ya que caracterizan bastante bien el contorno del cuerpo, y permiten cumplir con el objetivo central del trabajo que es hacer una primera exploración de la forma. Con respecto al número de marcas, parecen ser suficientes para caracterizar la forma, ya que se concentran principalmente en la parte posterior del cuerpo de los ácaros o cauda, que es la que varía con mayor frecuencia entre las especies.
Personalmente considero que la morfometría geométrica es un campo apasionante. El poder examinar a los organismos de esta manera, y no estar limitados a las simples mediciones, da la posibilidad de responder preguntas que antes serían inimaginables. A pesar de lo difícil que puede parecer la metodología a primera vista, al entenderla y aplicarla, se vuelve relativamente sencillo seguir cada paso y explicar y discutir los resultados. Tengo muchas expectativas de este trabajo y de las preguntas que sere capaz de resolver y sobre todo de las que surgiran sobre la marcha.

I am pleased to announce this year's morphometrics course from the University of Manchester. This year's course will run in the six weeks from 9 November to 18 December 2009.

* Geometric methods to characterise shape from a configuration of landmark points (Procrustes superimposition)

* Shape transformations and 'warping' -- the thin plate spline
* Analysis of outline shapes
* Distinguishing between groups (taxonomy, clinical diagnosis, etc.)

* Influence of external factors on shape (ecomorphology, dose-response studies)
* Symmetric forms and measurement of asymmetry.
* Morphometric inferences on developmental processes, morphological integration, modularity
* Genetics of shape: analyses of resemblance between relatives, QTL analyses.
* Phylogeny: reconstructing the evolution of shape

Practice examples:
As far as possible, practical exercises are provided to accompany the course content. These practice exercises consist of data sets and explanations on how to run the respective analyses using the MorphoJ software (http://www.flywings.org.uk/MorphoJ_page.htm). Participants who already have their own data are encouraged to use those and to discuss them as part of the course. I hope there will be a bit of a 'workshop' feel to the course unit.

Group work:
Participants will work in small groups to prepare web presentations of possible morphometric studies. This activity stimulates discussion and provides a broad overview of questions that can be addressed with morphometric methods.

The fee for the course is GBP 190.00 (I'm afraid it's gone up a bit from last year -- but the UK pound has dropped against most other currencies...).

All prospective participants need to pre-register for the course. The deadline for this is the *31 August 2009*.

Dear morphometricians,

there is a possibility that a Marie Curie funded short-term fellowship will be available in the Functional Morphology and Evolution Unit of the Hull York Medical School (http://hyms.fme.googlepages.com/home).

The project will be for a maximum of nine months (and a minimum of three) and will focus on biogeographic variation in skull morphology in red colobus monkeys, or similar. It will be supervised by Andrea Cardini and Sarah Elton. The data are already collected, and we are looking for someone with experience of geometric morphometric and / or spatial data analysis.

As it is a Marie Curie Early Stage fellowship, prospective fellows must be in the early stages of their research career (i.e. should not have a PhD or equivalent). UK nationals are not eligible to apply. Nationals of all other countries are eligible provided they have spent fewer than 12 months in the UK in total. The Fellowship must be completed by the end of March 2010. The funding for this project is dependent on finding a suitable applicant, and then is subject to confirmation. However, Andrea or Sarah would love to hear from interested people!

Proyecto de Morfometria de Pomacentridae

La M. en C. Rosalía Aguilar Medrano realizó una estancia de investigación de Marzo a Mayo, 2009 con Efrain De Luna en el Lab. de Morfometria, Depto. de Biodiversidad y Sistemática (Estancia de Rosalia Aguilar especialista de Pomacentridae).

Rosalía es estudiante del Doctorado en el Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas del Noreste (CIBNOR), La Paz, BCS. Lleva a cabo su trabajo de tesis en el laboratorio de ecología marina y en la colección de peces del CIBNOR.

Su trabajo de tesis trata el estudio de la variación ecomorfológica y la filogenia de la familia Pomacentridae en el Pacífico Oriental. Utiliza los análisis de morfología geométrica para resolver cual es la variación de la forma del cuerpo y particularmente la cabeza de los peces.

The double entendres in this paper could occupy me ALL DAY. And I want to hang their table of findings of "penile dimension" above my desk. It would make me smile. But as it is, I will post it for all of YOU!

Turin 2009 Geometrics Morphometrics Workshop

Geometric morphometrics is a set of statistical tools for the analysis and visualization of morphological variation. For its power it has been considered a 'revolution' in the field of morphometrics. The number of scientific papers using geometric morphometrics has increased exponentially over the last couple of decades. Geometric morphometric analyses have been successfully performed in a variety of disciplines ranging from taxonomy, palaeontology and evodevo to forensics, ergonomics and archaeology.
A short course in geometric morphometrics will be held at Turin University from August 31st to September 2nd 2009, immediately after the end of the ESEB 2009 meeting. The workshop will cover both introductory and more advanced topics. Lectures and practicals will be given by Chris Klingenberg (University of Manchester, UK) and Andrea Cardini ( Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia, Italy, and the Hull York Medical School, UK).

WORKSHOP PROGRAM
a) INTRODUCTORY TOPICS

- Introduction on morphometrics: the analysis of size and shape variation in organisms.
- Landmark-based geometric morphometrics: data collection; computation of size and shape
variables using the generalized Procrustes analysis.
- Summary and visualizartion of shape variation: principal component analysis and thin plate spline deformation grids.
- Statistical testing: an example using permutation tests for mean size and mean shape differences of two samples.

b) ADVANCED TOPICS

- Test for measurement error.
- Analysis of symmetric structures.
- Phylogenetic generalized least square.

c) STUDENTS PRESENTATIONS

- Participants who are willing to try their own analysis on their study data or the example files provided by the instructors will be given the possibility to briefly show their work in a short (5min.) presentation.

A registration fee of 100 euros is requested to cover the costs of the workshop organization.
Participants will have to provide accomodations, meals etc. by themselves. Software and example data will be avaialable for participants to practice and try their own analyses.

Confieso mi ingenuidad e ignorancia: me ha sorprendido leer que existen "Análisis de Componentes Principales Evolutivos"!
La fuente de la iluminación es el articulo:

Así que me dispuse a leerlo y averiguar que es este método, pues solo con el nombre me inspira una predisposición psicológica muy favorable.

Los datos: 8 medidas de los cascabeles de serpientes (el estilo), cuatro medidas de otras partes del cuerpo y el numero de escamas subcaudales. Nada extraordinario: distancias entre marcas y conteos.
Los ajustes: todas las variables transformadas en logs base 10. Se calcularon los residuales de la regresión de las variables contra una de ellas (snout–vent length) como una manera de estandarizar el efecto del tamaño.
La referencia: una filogenia ad hoc para colocar 34 especies en cinco grupos.
Los análisis ACPE: un circo extraordinario de tres pistas y necesito que alguien me dirija para disfrutar el espectáculo.
No quiero arriesgarme a hacer una mala traducción o una mala interpretación. La explicación de los autores dice:

"In cross-species comparisons, EPCA has an advantage over standard PCA in that EPCA extracts axes that maximize evolutionary change rather than ordinating static variation. In this variant of PCA, ancestral states are first reconstructed using squared-change parsimony and then eigenanalysis is performed on vectors of evolutionary change along each branch [18]. Thus, by incorporating phylogenetic information, EPCA is potentially able to reduce non-independence of cross-species data sets due to similarity through common descent."

Los resultados: Se graficaron los dos primeros componentes y se identificaron las variables correlacionadas con estos, como es usual.

Las interpretaciones:

"Thus we interpret the main spectrum of interspecific differences in style shape to reflect a continuum from relatively longer styles with deeper prongs, wider gaps between prongs (i.e., greater angle), more attenuated prongs, and greater constriction (or notching) near the juncture with the prongs and the anterior body of the style, to relatively shorter styles with shallow, but broad, prongs (or, in the extreme condition, prongs absent), and less constriction at the juncture of the prongs and the anterior
style body (see Fig. 1)."

Seguro que alguien ya había oído de este método! Que opinan? Realmente es la manera de revelar la información de las diferencias evolutivas entre linajes? Que otras alternativas existen?

Mi preferencia es tradicional: reconstruir la serie transformacional optimizando los cambios de estados en el cladograma. El diagnostico de los estados por supuesto puede ser referido a un espacio morfometrico. Mi preferencia es el morfoespacio mediante los Análisis de Variables Canonicas extraido del espacio configurado por las variables que describen la característica estudiada.

Espero sus comentarios y aclaraciones, pues seguro se me escapa algo sobre los ACPE.

Le 6ème Symposium de « Morphométrie et Evolution des Formes » se tiendra à Montpellier (amphithéâtre de la délégation régionale du CNRS, route de Mende) les 27 et 28 mai 2009.

Cette réunion scientifique a pour objectif d’encourager les échanges entre les utilisateurs des approches morphométriques dans le domaine de l'évolution envisagée sous différentes facettes incluant notamment, la biologie évolutive, l’étude du développement, l’archéologie environnementale, les approches archéobiologiques, la paléontologie, la paléobotanique et l’écologie. Au-delà des aspects méthodologiques, il s'adresse à tous les scientifiques intéressés par la quantification et l'étude des formes d'objets biologiques.

Le symposium sera ouvert à tous dans la limite des places disponibles dans l'amphithéâtre de la délégation régionale (165 places assises dont 6 places accessibles aux personnes à mobilité réduite). Les communications se feront sous forme de courts exposés oraux et de posters, en Français ou en Anglais.

L’inscription au symposium est gratuite, mais obligatoire pour des raisons d’organisation. Les repas de midi des 27 et 28 seront pris en charge par le GDR MEF et par l'Institut des Sciences de l'Evolution de Montpellier. Les transports, logement et repas du soir sont à la charge des participants.

Programas para morfometria: MorphoJ

Como segunda entrega de la serie de descripciones de programas para morfometria aquí contribuyo con una sobre MorphoJ.
Este es un paquete de varias funciones escrito en JAVA. Fundamentalmente se usa para generar coordenadas comunes mediante técnicas de superposición Procrustes en 2D y 3D. Por supuesto, se pueden realizar los mas importantes tipos de analisis de morfometria geometrica como analisis de ordenacion de los componentes de la deformación relativa (A de Componentes Principales y A de variables Canonicas), regresiones, etc.

El paquete contiene varias rutinas en Java para los despliegues gráficos de la variacion y las deformaciones relativas. La nueva version (1.00k) recientemente anunciada permite exportar los graficos en varios formatos de vectores y pixeles.

G'day,

I have a rather technical question (i.e. I'm interested in the
underlying technique rather than software that can do it). Here is the
problem:

Given a sample of images (say lateral images of the human facial
skeleton), we locate quite a number of landmarks (actually
semi-landmarks or slid-landmarks) with landmarks coming from many
different structures. I'd like to test for relationships between the
structures - i.e. do changes in this structure (e.g mandible) , produce
corresponding changes in that structure (e.g. upper dentition). Of
course I can do a Procrustes analysis, followed by a PCA and visually
see how the structures co-vary along the principal axes, but I am
interested in something a little less qualitative, perhaps more along
the lines of a hypothesis test. I was thinking perhaps of canonical
correlation analysis between different sets of structures, but I haven't
seen much work using this technique in shape analysis. Does anyone have
any advice or pointers to other work?

Probably the most widespread technique for this is PLS. A good review of
the technique is the following paper:
Rohlf, F. J., and M. Corti. 2000. The use of two-block partial
least-squares to study covariation in shape. Systematic Biology 49:740–753.

PLS has been used for landmarks in separate configurations, for which
separate Procrustes fits are used. A couple of examples of this:

Tabachnick, R. E., and F. L. Bookstein. 1990. The structure of
individual variation in Miocene Globorotalia. Evolution 44:416–434.

Bastir, M., and A. Rosas. 2005. Hierarchical nature of morphological
integration and modularity in the human posterior face. American Journal
of Physical Anthropology 128:26–34.

A different option is the approach of using a single Procrustes fit for
all landmarks, and then a PLS analysis among sets of landmarks within
the configuration. Examples include:

54:1273–1285.

Programas para morfometría: IMP

Con esta nota espero iniciar un efecto dominó para invitar a todos que publiquen aquí sus descripciones de los programas que usan para morfometría. Permitanme iniciar esta serie con mi programa favorito:

Integrated Morphometrics Package (IMP).

IMP es un paquete de varios programas. Fundamentalmente se usa para generar coordenadas comunes mediante técnicas de superposición (CoordGen) y para ordenar los componentes de la deformación relativa (PCAGen, CVAGen). El paquete contiene varios programas y se pueden hacer varias operaciones, análisis estadísticos y despliegues gráficos de la variacion y las deformaciones relativas.

Tipicamente el registro de las coordenadas puede hacerse con tpsDig (parte de la serie de programas de J. Rohlf) y luego IMP: CoordGen lee el archivo con las coordenadas registradas y las transforma por medio de superposiciones a coordenadas Procrustes, por ejemplo. Estas coordenadas se usan para estimar los componentes de las deformaciones. Las variables derivadas del analisis de la deformacion se usan finalmente para los analisis estadisticos, por ejemplo, de ordenacion, y para la visualizacion del cambio relativo de las formas mediante la tecnica de TPS (con IMP:CVA Gen). Otros programas del paquete IMP permiten realizar varios analisis estadisticos como Regresiones, Alometria, etc.

IMP es para Windows. Su funcionalidad es completa con WinXP y versiones anteriores. Tambien funciona muy bien bajo Linux (hemos trabajado con Ubuntu y OpenSuse). Es posible que la version para Mac Os este disponible en el futuro.

Primero quiero comentarles que me parece muy interesante su blog y como lo estan actualizando continuamente, quiero pedirles de favor si me pueden ayudar a encontrar bibliografia pdf, sobre morfometría lineal y con análisis de fourier.

El hecho es que tengo que preparar mi examen predoctoral "identificación de grupos poblacionales a través del análisis de forma" y quiero abordarlo con las herramientas relacionadas, pero tengo muy pocos trabajos con las técnicas que les comente anteriormente, y me seria de gran ayuda tener articulos con aplicaciones y libros que pudiese consultar sobre las ventajas y desventajas de cada una de las técnicas.

Actualmente, estoy haciendo el doctorado en ciencias marinas en CICIMAR-IPN, La Paz, BCS. y estoy trabajando con sierra del Pacífico. Utilizando la forma del otolito con M. Geométrica hemos identificado 4 stocks en el Pacífico Mexicano. Esto tiene como consecuencia que podemos hacer recomendaciones que la evaluación pesquera y las medidas de manejo de este recurso sean dirigidas según las caracteristicas de cada uno de los stocks, ya que en México no se conoce mucho del recurso y es donde se extrae el 75% de la captura del Pacífico oriental.

Morfometría Geométrica y Salud Pública

Las técnicas de morfometria geométrica son de reciente aplicación en el estudio de insectos de importancia medica, desde el punto de vista epidemiológico esta herramienta a sido empleada para estudiar variaciones intraespecíficas (poblaciones domesticas y peridomesticas, antes y post rociado) y detectar riesgo de transmisión de la enfermedad de Chagas debido al alto y/o bajo flujo genético y continua movilidad que presentan las poblaciones de los vectores.
Cuando existe poblaciones muy homogéneas dado el constante flujo de las poblaciones de insectos, se prevé reinfestaciones a los domicilios, provenientes de los ambientes peridoméstico y silvestre, ejemplos de ello/ T//. maculata/ Venezuela ( Soto Vivas et al 2008);/ R. prolixus/ Venezuela (Matin et al 2007); /P. geniculatus/ Colombia (Jaramillo /et al./ 2002), /Triatoma dimidiata/ de México y el Norte de Guatemala (Lehmann /et al./ 2005), de igual manera se utilizado en discriminación taxonómica de /R. robustus/ en Bolivia (Matias /et al./ 2001), /R. prolixus/ y /R. robustus/ de Venezuela (Villegas 2002).
En triatominos marcadores tales como las dimensiones externas (morfometría), están muy influenciados por el medio ambiente, ejemplo de ello la presión de selección a través de insecticidas químicos y/o modificaciones del entorno,etc., durante el desarrollo del insecto del huevo al adulto. No obstante si se puede separar la variabilidad métrica en sus componentes ambientales y genéticos, la morfometria puede ser informativa e incluso ser convalidada con los resultados obtenidos con técnicas moleculares.

Morphometric analyses have become increasingly widespread in biological and medical research, and new approaches to shape analysis are developed and refined by statisticians. The UK is unique in having sizeable communities of both statisticians and biologists or medical researchers interested in the analysis of shape.

This meeting aims to bring together the communities of researchers in statistics and the biological and medical sciences who are interested in the analysis of shape. We hope that the meeting will be an opportunity to engage in interactions across disciplines and maybe will stimulate new collaborative projects at the interface of statistics and the life sciences.
